Trip Overview
Located in northern Tanzania between Moshi and Tanga, Mkomazi National Park is a hidden gem offering an off-the-beaten-path safari experience. Surrounded by the dramatic Pare and Usambara Mountains — and with Mount Kilimanjaro visible on clear days — this park blends spectacular scenery with unique wildlife encounters.
Covering 3,245 km², Mkomazi lies at the southern tip of the Sahel zone, with a climate that creates a mix of acacia-commiphora woodlands and dryland forests. Game drives along the Umba River, the park’s main water source, are particularly rewarding.
Mkomazi is one of the few places in Tanzania where you can see endangered black rhinos in their natural habitat. It’s also home to rare African wild dogs, alongside giraffes, elands, hartebeests, zebras, buffalos, elephants, and the elegant long-necked gerenuk.
For bird lovers, Mkomazi is a paradise, with over 450 bird species, including the cobalt-chested vulturine guinea fowl, kori bustard, ostrich, secretary bird, ground hornbill, and seasonal migratory species like the Eurasian roller.
If you want a less crowded, highly rewarding safari with a touch of wilderness exclusivity, Mkomazi is the perfect choice
